Seventeen-year-old William Chinzewe, from Zambia, has achieved a historic milestone, solidifying his status as the first African to claim a world championship title. In the 2023 Under-20 World Championship, William emerged victorious, adding to his earlier Under-17 World Championship win in Bulgaria just over a year ago. Chinzewe's impressive performance resulted in a total of 12 points after eight rounds of competition, placing him 2 points ahead of the second-placed competitor, Tsynov Arsenii from Belarus. This achievement represents his second medal at the Draught 64 Championships, which are currently underway in Turkey until October 30th. Previously, he secured a silver medal in the blitz competition of the Under-23 category. Meanwhile, Chinzewe's compatriots, International Master Lukanga Mambwe and Elijah, are also taking part in the competition, although they are yet to secure any medals.
