Alfred Foloko, the President of the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ), recently had a discussion with Neil Gregory, who serves as the Australia-based Development Officer for the Wrestling Association of Zambia (WAZ). During this virtual exchange, Neil outlined WAZ's ongoing efforts to promote and expand wrestling in Zambia and highlighted potential collaborations between WAZ and NOCZ. Mr. Gregory provided more detail on WAZ's central focus, which is nurturing grassroots participation and advancing wrestling's development within the country. This includes organizing national competitions and offering diverse training programs designed for referees, coaches, and sports trainers. Furthermore, Neil emphasized WAZ's collaborative approach to a Regional Education plan, which envisions the possibility of hosting a regional competition in Zambia. This event would encompass coaching, refereeing, training, and competitive assessments. In response, Mr. Foloko shared insights into the process of hosting a regional competition within Zambia. He underscored NOCZ's steadfast commitment to supporting WAZ in various capacities, including the creation of a practical Strategic Plan, coach training, and improvements in governance within the association. Additionally, Neil presented an intriguing proposition to NOCZ leading up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games—a potential engagement with the Australian government focusing on youth, sports, and health. Such a multilateral collaboration holds the promise of positive outcomes for both NOCZ and Zambia's sports landscape. Appreciating the shared insights, Foloko agreed that all available opportunities would be systematically explored through relevant government channels, ultimately benefiting sports in Zambia. He highlighted the favorable political environment, particularly President Hakainde Hichilema's consistent advocacy for leveraging sports as a catalyst for youth development. Notably, during the 2022 Annual General Meeting held on April 22, 2023, NOCZ officially ratified the Wrestling Association of Zambia's membership within the Olympic Movement in Zambia, solidifying its position as the 30th Sports Association affiliated with NOCZ.
