Zambia proudly clinched the third position at the recently concluded 2023 Region-Five Under-19 Youth Darts Championships, held in Lusaka, amassing a total of 24 well-deserved medals. Despite securing an overall bronze, the Darts Association of Zambia (DAZ) hailed the performance as a testament to the remarkable strides achieved in the sport's development. The tournament, hosted at OYDC-Zambia, saw Zambia's medal tally comprise one gold medal, brilliantly secured by the young talent Edward Mwaba from Sip City. Additionally, the team garnered seven silver medals, with notable contributions from Zambia's skipper, Sandra Kasebeleka, among others. The collection was rounded out by an impressive 16 bronze medals. Zumbe Mazabuka, the Secretary-General of DAZ, commended the young Zambian participants for their performance, which exceeded expectations. He acknowledged that Zambia's pursuit of an overall gold medal fell short due to the absence of players in the 16 to 18-year age group. This gap in the lineup allowed Botswana and Zimbabwe to surpass Zambia's standing, despite Zambia initially leading in the competition. Botswana emerged as the champions, while Zimbabwe secured second place. South Africa claimed the fourth position, with eSwatini finishing in fifth place. Mazabuka expressed his admiration for the team's exceptional effort, noting, "The guys did exceptionally well. It must be stated here that this is the first time all of them were playing at an event of this magnitude, and they did not disappoint. The only reason we finished in third is that we didn't have players in certain categories. But in areas where we fielded, we were exceptional. I can say we have youngsters to take the game forward, and all we have to do is recruit more. We have shown that darts can be played by youths in a very safe and conducive environment." The future of darts in Zambia appears promising, with these budding talents ready to make their mark on the sport.
