15 fighters have been selected to represent Zambia at the IMMAF - International Mixed Martial Arts Federation Africa Championship, which will be held in Luanda, Angola. MMA Zambia, the governing body of Mixed Martial Arts in Zambia, announced their intention to send a team of 15 athletes and 5 officials to the championship, which is scheduled for September 14th to 17th, 2023. The IMMAF Africa Championship is considered the premier showcase of amateur Mixed Martial Arts in Africa, with participants from over 19 countries expected to compete. IMMAF is the only world governing body that organizes amateur championships in Africa. This event provides fighters with the unique opportunity to test their skills against the best in Africa, demonstrating IMMAF's commitment to giving African MMA athletes a platform to showcase their talent and compete at an international level. This will be the seventh edition of the IMMAF African Championships, but the first to be held outside of South Africa. The decision to award the hosting rights to the Federação Angolana de MMA reflects the growth of MMA throughout the African continent and IMMAF's dedication to supporting all its members and promoting the sport's development in Africa. Zambia previously participated in the continental showcase in 2022, sending a team of three athletes who managed to win a silver medal. This achievement was a significant milestone for Zambia and helped put the country on the international MMA map as one of the progressive countries in the sport. With the increasing number of fighters and their continuous improvement in skills, MMA Zambia is confident that the team will return with more medals from this year's championship. MMA Zambia has submitted detailed budgets and plans to the Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts through the National Sports Council of Zambia. They are optimistic about receiving a positive response to their request for partial funding. Additionally, MMA Zambia is appealing to the corporate sector for sponsorship to assist with the team's travel, accommodation, and expenses while in Angola.
