Absa Bank has committed a significant sum of five million kwacha to support this year's marathon, scheduled for August 26, 2023, at the Lusaka Showground. The bank's CEO, Mizinga Melu, emphasized that this investment is part of their ongoing dedication to promoting athletics and fitness in Zambia. Speaking at the media briefing in Lusaka, Ms Melu acknowledged the marathon's success over the past five years, attributing it to collaborative efforts with partners such as Lusaka Fitness Squad, Trade Kings, and others. The marathon is expected to draw four thousand runners across various categories, with a generous top prize of forty-five thousand kwacha in the forty-two-kilometre category. This prize will be awarded to both male and female winners, emphasising the importance of gender equality in sports. "We are also introducing a bonus of 15 thousand kwacha for any breakthrough winner. This year's marathon will have approximately 800 runners who will participate virtually, and about 3,200 runners will take part in the physical event," Ms Mizinga Melu said. Zambia Athletics (ZA) President Elias Mpondela, in his speech read by Committee Member Godwin Chenda, appealed to sponsors to consider upgrading the marathon by introducing bronze, silver, and gold medals to elevate the marathon's status and attract international runners. He also urged cooperating partners to create employment opportunities for athletes, many of whom come from underprivileged backgrounds. "We are pleased to confirm that the Absa Marathon has met international marathon standards. The Absa marathon is the only marathon in Zambia that has met the standard and can now be recommended for grading by the World Athletics Association," Mr Mpondela's speech read. This year's Marathon kit was also unveiled.
