The AUSC Region 5 Walk for Life attracted over 1,000 participants, including three Ministers, with Elvis Nkandu, the Minister of Youth, Sports, and Arts, leading the way. This 5km walk aimed to promote physical activity and exercise among citizens, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The event, centered on the theme "Stop Gender-Based Violence," received support from the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sport (NIF) and was linked to The Association For International Sports For All (TAFISA) World Walking Day and the UNESCO Fit for Life concept. Taking place in September, declared as the Region 5 month for commemorating Sport for Persons with Disability (SPWD), this event was part of a broader initiative across Region 5 Member Countries to engage a minimum of 10,000 participants in the Walk for Life. Livingston's event featured over 1,200 participants from various sectors, including schools, colleges, government ministries, and civil society. Delegates from nine other Region 5 Member Countries and international partners added an international dimension to the event. Participants enjoyed aerobics and Zumba dance before commencing the walk, flagged off by Minister Nkandu at 6 am. The event, accompanied by a brass band and drum majorettes, garnered significant attention in Livingston, emphasizing the message against gender-based violence. Stanley Mutoya, the AUSC Region 5 CEO, commended the collaboration between the Zambian government, specifically the Ministry of Sports, Youth, and Arts, and Region 5 for hosting the successful inaugural event. Plans were in progress to establish this event as an annual global showcase with the aim of contributing to increased tourism in Zambia and Livingston city.
