The Zambia women's national football team, nicknamed the Copper Queens, is set to play Angola in a two-legged qualifier for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The first leg will be played in Angola on the weekend of November 24-26, with the return leg set for the first week of December in Zambia. Zambia finished third at the last WAFCON tournament in Morocco in 2022, their highest-ever finish, which also qualified them for their debut World Cup. The World Cup was hosted by Australia and New Zealand earlier this year. The President of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), Andrew Kamanga, has stated that the aim is to ensure the team qualifies for the next WAFCON tournament. "Our aim is to make it three times in a row to be part of the WAFCON," Kamanga said. The winner over the two legs will qualify for the 2024 WAFCON, and the Copper Queens stand a good chance of coming out on top against Angola. Kamanga also hopes that the momentum from the WAFCON qualifiers will set the team up for a good run in the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers. Zambia is set to play Ghana in a two-legged fixture in February next year to determine which country makes it to the final round of qualifiers and represents Africa at the Olympic football tournament. "The momentum for WAFCON qualification should continue next year in February when we resume the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers," Kamanga said. The winner of the Zambia vs Ghana tie will face either Morocco or Tunisia in the final round. "We believe there is enough room to add more accolades to the women's game," Kamanga said. Zambia was the sole representative of Africa at the 2021 Olympic football tournament and hopes to make a return next year.
