Zambia's Barbra Banda, the skipper of the Copper Queens, has expressed her delight at being nominated for the prestigious CAF African Footballer of the Year award for 2023. Banda, who enjoyed a stellar year leading the Copper Queens to their first-ever World Cup appearance in Australia and New Zealand, and securing qualification for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, will be vying for the award against South Africa's Thembi Kgatlana and the five-time winner Asisat Oshoala. Taking to social media on Thursday, Banda expressed her gratitude, stating, "I can't begin to express my gratitude to be part of the final three shortlist for the #2023cafawards for the Player of the year. Being one of three for the accolade from a continent littered with amazing Women's Football talent is something I'm incredibly proud of." Banda was quick to acknowledge the crucial role her teammates played in her success, saying, "Thank you to my teammates at club level and National team for helping me to perform to my level best every time." She further extended her appreciation to her coaches and the unwavering support of the fans, "To my coaches, thank you for your guidance. To the fans out there, thank you for believing in me and my teammates every time we walk on the pitch." Banda's nomination reflects her exceptional contribution to Zambian football.
