Nigeria and FC Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala cemented her place as African football royalty on Monday night, securing the coveted CAF Women's Player of the Year award for a record sixth time. In a historic ceremony held in Morocco, Oshoala edged past Zambian star Barbara Banda and South African striker Thembi Kgatlana to retain the prestigious accolade. Despite a phenomenal year for Banda, netting 32 goals for club and country, Oshoala's sustained excellence and undeniable influence proved too much to overcome. Her leadership and goalscoring prowess for Barcelona, culminating in their Champions League triumph, solidified her position as Africa's undisputed queen of the pitch. Although it wasn't the result Banda had hoped for, the Zambian international wasn't left empty-handed. Recognizing her instrumental role in Zambia's success throughout the year, including their impressive World Cup campaign and WAFCON qualification, Banda was deservedly named in the FIFPro Women's CAF XI. This recognition highlights Banda's immense potential and solidifies her position as one of the future stars of African football. While she may have fallen short this time, the 23-year-old remains a strong contender for the crown in the years to come, provided she maintains her exceptional form.
