Chipata City Mayor George Mwanza, in collaboration with the Eastern Province Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), has launched the inaugural Grannies Women Football League in Chipata District. FAZ Chairperson for Eastern Province, Chrispin Kamuna, highlighted the concerted efforts between his office and Mayor Mwanza to attract investments in football, aiming to spur economic development in the region. Kamuna emphasized the transformative potential of programs targeting older demographics, stating, "These are ages that have shown that they don't want to sit back, and the only way to empower them is finding people who can financially empower our grannies who are already in groups." Inspired by a South African national known as Mamabeca, who recognized the health challenges faced by women over 50, particularly ailments like body strain, high blood pressure, and diabetes, the women's football league aims not only to promote physical activity but also combat non-communicable diseases. And speaking at the official launch at David Kaunda Stadium, Mayor Mwanza expressed his gratification that older women have embraced the initiative to keep active, leading healthier lives. Mwanza pledged full support to the participating teams, offering soccer jerseys, prize money, and other essential items. He urged the Provincial FAZ executive committee to expand the Grannies Football League to other districts and encouraged teams to apply for empowerment packages under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). Meanwhile, Felistus Mwale, the Regional Coordinator for the Grannies Women Football Competition, attested to the positive impact of the sport on the participants' health and social connections. The event commenced with a procession from ABSA Bank, led by FAZ women representative Lillian Vergeer. The launch marks a significant stride toward fostering inclusivity and promoting the well-being of older women through the universal language of football.
