Rachael Kundananji and Madrid CFF's 2024 struggles continued on Sunday, as they fell 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao in the Round of 16 of the Copa de la Reina, marking their second consecutive defeat to start the year. The Copper Queens attacker featured for the entire match but was unable to inspire her side to a comeback after Nahikari García's early strike in the third minute proved to be the only goal of the game. Despite Kundananji's best efforts, Madrid CFF couldn't find an equalizer, allowing the home side to hold on for the victory and book their place in the last eight of the competition. The loss deals a significant blow to Madrid CFF's hopes of silverware in 2024. With Barcelona's continued dominance in the league, the Copa de la Reina was seen as a more attainable path to a trophy. Finishing fifth in the league last season, Madrid CFF recognized the cup competition as an opportunity to break through and add some hardware to their cabinet. However, with this defeat, their focus now shifts to returning to winning ways in the league. They face Real Betis on January 20th, a team currently on a four-game losing streak. Having beaten Betis in their last two meetings, Madrid CFF will see this as a prime opportunity to get back on track and put their Copa de la Reina disappointment behind them. Despite the recent setbacks, Madrid CFF can take solace in their strong record against Betis and their potential to climb the table.
