Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo played out a thrilling 1-1 draw in their opening Group F match of the TotalEnergies 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in San Pedro on Wednesday. First-half goals from Kings Kangwa (23rd minute) and Yoane Wissa (27th minute) ensured the two neighboring countries had to settle for a point apiece. While the scoreline suggests a close encounter, the reality was a more one-sided affair. DR Congo dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities, but their wastefulness in front of goal proved costly. Zambia, fielding a youthful team under the guidance of veteran coach Avram Grant, were largely on the back foot. Kings Kangwa's long-range strike, assisted by Patson Daka, gave them a surprise lead, but Wissa's quick response restored parity shortly after. The second half saw fewer chances created, with both sides struggling to break each other down. A potential turning point came in the 62nd minute when Zambia conceded a penalty. However, a VAR review overturned the decision after replays showed the ball hitting defender Thandie Mwape's thigh before his hand, much to the relief of the Chipolopolo boys. Despite being under constant pressure, Zambia's defense, marshaled by the experienced duo of Stoppila Sunzu and Frankie Musonda, held firm. However, their midfield trio of Emmanuel Banda, Kelvin Kampumbu, and Kings Kangwa struggled to control the tempo of the game. Rodrick Kabwe continued to be a weak link in Zambia's defense, despite showing some improvement in the second half. Coach Grant will need to address his team's passing in transition if they are to stand a chance of progressing further in the tournament. Zambia, returning to the AFCON after an eight-year absence, showed commendable game management skills despite seeing little of the ball. They will face Tanzania in their next match, while DR Congo takes on Group F leaders Morocco, who beat Tanzania earlier in the day.
