Gelson Dala's impressive brace propelled Angola to a 3-2 victory against Mauritania in a thrilling Africa Cup of Nations clash, bringing an end to Angola's nine-game winless streak in the tournament since 2012. Dominating the early first half, Angola secured their 30th-minute opener through Dala, who capitalized on a corner that Mauritania failed to clear. However, Sidi Bouna Amar leveled for Mauritania two minutes before the break following a superb individual effort by cruising past five Angolan defenders before delivering a left-footed finish. Angola's Dala did not waste any time and responded with a goal of similar brilliance in the second half while Gilberto, who had been a late call-up to the tournament, then netted from an even tighter angle to widen Angola's lead. Nevertheless, Angola's two-goal lead swiftly diminished in the 58th minute when Aboubakary Koita of Mauritania unleashed a scorching effort, sending a powerful shot from beyond the Angola penalty area into the net. Angola's triumph now places them at the top of Group D. Next up, Angola faces Burkina Faso, while Algeria takes on Mauritania, with all four teams vying for a spot in the next round. Mauritania's path to progress involves a must-win against Algeria in Bouake next week to secure a spot among the four best third-placed nations.
