Copper Queens attacker Rachael Kundananji came off the bench to help Madrid CFF record their first win of the year against Real Betis on Saturday, ending a two-game losing streak in 2024. Kundananji, who was recently named in the Guardian's top 100 best female footballers, started on the bench but entered the fray in the 66th minute with the score already 3-1 in Madrid's favour. She played a vital role in seeing out the comfortable victory in the Spanish La Liga F. Madrid, who had lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in their first game of the year before suffering a surprise 1-0 Copa de SM La Reina exit at the hands of Atletico Bilbao in the round of 16, desperately needed a boost. This victory comes as a relief for the team that finished fifth last season for the first time in their history, thanks in large part to Kundananji's 25 league goals. The win moves them up to fourth on the table with 30 points, level on points with third-placed Real Madrid, after playing 14 games. The Zambian international will be hoping to return to the starting lineup when Madrid face Real Sociedad next in the league. Kundananji has so far scored 8 goals and provided two assists this season, earning three team of the week selections.
