Avram Grant, the Zambian national team coach, has ignited a post-match inferno by requesting the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to investigate the officiating of Beninese referee Djindo Louis Houngnandande in Zambia's 1-1 draw against Tanzania. The controversy stems from a 44th-minute incident where Zambia's skipper, Rodrick Kabwe, was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on a Tanzanian player. Grant, a veteran with a well-earned reputation for not mincing words, was livid in his post-match assessment. "I am disappointed with the result," Grant thundered, his voice thick with indignation. "The red card to Rodrick Kabwe is not a red card." The Zambian coach went on to claim that Houngnandande's decision effectively decided the outcome of the match. "It was difficult to fight with ten players," he lamented. "We can't fight the referee, but we can fight on the pitch. But I think the referee decided the game. The result was on him." Grant's words carry significant weight, given his stature in African football and his reputation for meticulous preparation. His accusation that the referee swung the tie in Tanzania's favor is bound to raise eyebrows throughout the continent. Replays of the incident show Kabwe challenging for the ball in the air that was there to be won. While firm, appears within the bounds of fair play. The referee's interpretation, however, was decidedly different, leading to Kabwe's dismissal and Grant's subsequent outburst. Whether CAF will heed Grant's request for an investigation remains to be seen.
