Jean-Louis Gasset has been dismissed as the coach of Ivory Coast, hosts of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, just two days after a devastating 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea – the heaviest home defeat in the country's history. This makes Ivory Coast the first Afcon host since 1984 to lose two group games. The decision to terminate Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant's contracts was attributed to "insufficient results" by the country's football federation. The team will now be led on an interim basis by Emerse Fae, one of Gasset's coaches. Ivory Coast, carrying faint hopes of advancing to the AFCON knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams, are now waiting to see the outcome of the last group games' to determine their fate. The Elephants will benefit from Zambia's failure to get a positive outcomes from Morocco tonight and successfully sneak their way into the AFCON round of 16 as one of the best third-placed team on the four available slots. Their hopes of progressing despite their shock defeat in Abidjan were boosted when Group B ended with Ghana finishing third in the group on two points.
