Zambia U-17 women's national team head coach Carol Kanyemba says her team is almost ready for the back-to-back Chile 2024 World Cup qualifiers against Tanzania, with the first leg set for Lusaka's Nkoloma Stadium on February 3rd. Speaking after a practice match against Blue Bullets Sports Academy U14 boys team on Friday at Edwin Imboela Stadium, Kanyemba said her team is nearing completion, with just a few areas needing polishing before the Tanzania ties. "The girls are shaping up well," Kanyemba said. "We decided to have a friendly game against the U14 boys so that we can see the players' understanding of what we have been teaching them. We know where we are lacking. In the final week, we are going to work on simple mistakes we made and put together the final puzzle and other pieces." With some players returning to the national team after previous appearances, alongside new entrants, Coach Kanyemba disclosed that integrating the team initially posed challenges. "When we started, it wasn't easy because some of the players were getting intimidated," she admitted. "But as days went by, they proved themselves and showed they can compete with those who have been here before. So far, that has brought a lot of competition." Coach Kanyemba will name her final squad next week ahead of the match. Zambia will be looking to make their return to the World Cup after participating in 2014. Most of the players from that team now play for the senior team, which made its senior World Cup debut in 2023 in New Zealand and Australia.
