The 2023 TotalEnergies Cote D'Ivoire Africa Cup of Nations continues to offer more twists and turns as Angola shocked Namibia in a Cosafa derby at the Africa Cup of Nations. Gelson Dala grabbed a brace to send Angola to the quarterfinals for the third time in their history, following their appearances in the quarterfinal stages at the 2008 and 2010 tournaments. Angola had an impressive group stage performance, winning Group D with 7 points. They looked to continue that trajectory, but their hopes were hampered when goalkeeper Neblu saw a direct red card in the 17th minute for a professional handball. Despite the early setback, Angola's morale remained high, and they took the lead in the 38th minute through Gelson Dala's opener. Two minutes later, the numerical advantage swung back in Angola's favor as Namibia's Lubeni Haukongo received a second yellow card and was sent off. With the numbers level, it was Dala again who struck in the 42nd minute, coolly finishing after a far-corner fly-by from Freddy, his second assist of the game. Dala's brace took him to four goals in four matches going into the quarterfinals. The second half was a more even affair, but Mabululu put the game to bed in the 66th minute with a well-curled shot from the far corner, assisted by Dala. Angola will be hoping to go further than their previous quarterfinal appearances when they face the winner of the Nigeria vs. Cameroon clash in the quarterfinals. They remain unbeaten at the tournament and are proving to be one of the surprise packages.
