Cameroon's journey at the 2023 totalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations has come to an end in the round of 16, despite securing a place in the knockout stage after Zambia's failure to pick a point against Morocco in Group F. Ademola Lookman's brace proved too much for the Indomitable Lions of Yaoundé, who lacked bite against the Super Eagles of Nigeria throughout the match. Nigeria nearly opened the scoring early on, but Semi Ajayi's goal was ruled offside by VAR in the 11th minute. However, they persevered and eventually took the lead in the 36th minute through Lookman. Napoli's Victor Osimhen played a crucial role, squaring the ball to the unmarked Atalanta man who calmly slotted past the Cameroon keeper. The second half saw Nigeria continue to dominate, with Osimhen proving a constant threat. The battle between him and Cameroon defender Oumar Gonzalez was a highlight, with Gonzalez doing his best to contain the Nigerian striker. Cameroon attempted to turn the tide with the introduction of veteran Vincent Aboubakar, but his presence yielded no change in fortune against a resolute Nigerian defense. Nigeria sealed their victory in the 90th minute with a well-worked free-kick routine. Calvin Bassey's precise low cross was met perfectly by Lookman, who hit it straight at the keeper who parred it into the net for his second goal of the game. Three-time AFCON winners Nigeria will now face Angola next week on Friday in a quarterfinal clash, with a place in the semifinals on the line.
