The 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations has been nothing short of sensational, turning traditional expectations upside down with underdogs outclassing giants and Africa's top-ranked teams suffering shock exits. Gone are the days of predictable pre-tournament favorites cruising to glory; this AFCON is all about the underdogs' roar. Forget about the 2021 quarterfinalists - Senegal, Egypt, Morocco, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Cameroon, and Tunisia. This year, a whole new set of nations are vying for continental supremacy: Nigeria, DR Congo, Angola, South Africa, Mali, Cape Verde, Guinea, and Ivory Coast. Every single team that made the last eight in 2021 has been replaced by a challenger hungry for their moment in the spotlight. The dethroning began with defending champions Senegal, boasting a perfect group stage record, who were unexpectedly sent packing by Ivory Coast, a team that scraped into the knockout stages. Morocco, Africa's highest-ranked team and a 2022 World Cup semi-finalist, suffered a similar fate, succumbing 2-0 to South Africa in the round of 16. The upsets didn't stop there. Seven-time champions Egypt were bundled out by DR Congo, while four-time winners Ghana couldn't even escape the group stage, which was remarkably won by outsiders Cape Verde. Even Cameroon, with five AFCON titles to their name, fell victim to Nigeria, leaving none of Africa's top-ranked teams remaining before the quarterfinals. The dominance of the underdogs is undeniable. All five of the highest-ranked African teams at the tournament have been eliminated: Morocco (1st in Africa, 13th in the world), Senegal (20th), Tunisia (26th), Algeria (30th), and Egypt (33rd). This AFCON is proving that rankings and past glories hold little weight in the face of unwavering determination and tactical brilliance. With the giants vanquished, the path to the final is wide open.
