In a groundbreaking achievement, seventeen-year-old Naomi Mwale has etched her name in history as the youngest female player ever to secure a spot in the Chess Senior National Team. Mwale's remarkable feat unfolded during the Women's Section of the National Team Playoffs, where she outplayed nine seasoned competitors, including Constance Mbatha, who held the prestigious Women FIDE Master title. Securing the top position, Mwale's triumph means she will be joined by Namakau Likando, who secured second place, and Mbatha, finishing third. These three exceptional players will stand alongside Lorita Mwango and Lubuto Mwale, forming the formidable five-member female contingent in the Senior National Team. Expressing her joy after the playoffs, Mwale conveyed her excitement at making history, underscoring the persistence she exhibited in multiple attempts to secure a spot in the national team. Addressing the aspiring players, Leslie Chikuse, the President of the Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ), urged those who did not make it to the national team to persevere and continue their hard work, emphasizing the abundance of opportunities still available for them to represent their country on the chessboard.
