Zambia's Rachael Kundananji, the world's most expensive female footballer, embraces the pressure that accompanies her record-breaking transfer. The 23-year-old forward recently joined Bay FC from Madrid CFF for a staggering $788,000 (£620,000), marking her as the most expensive female player to date. Acknowledging the weight of the world-record transfer fee, Kundananji admits to The Guardian from Ndola, "There is so much pressure on me. But I just have to calm down, focus on my work, and continue playing football." For Kundananji, this is only the beginning. "This is not the end," she emphasizes. "The fans' expectations will be high, and opponents are not going to be friendly. That's why there is so much pressure now." Despite the challenges, the young striker remains undaunted. "I am not putting myself under any pressure," she declares. "I am going to the United States as if it's not my first time." Speaking with confidence, Kundananji asserts that she belongs to a talented generation of African footballers rewriting the record books. She looks forward to achieving more milestones: "Our generation is the chosen one; expect more records to be broken. This is the generation that will show there is great talent in Africa." Kundananji's words are reinforced by her teammate's achievements, as her national team captain, Barbra Banda, recently became the world's second most expensive female footballer. Malawian international Temwa Chawinga, another African star, was also named the 2023 world's top scorer, with an incredible 63 goals throughout the year.
