Mbwana Samatta, the captain of the Tanzanian national football team, the Taifa Stars, has announced his retirement from international football. The reason for his decision has yet to be disclosed. Samatta, who plays for Greek side POAK Salonika, was initially asked to be excused from the squad to face Zambia in the Africa World Cup qualifier scheduled for June 11. He then informed the FA of his decision to retire from international football. The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has confirmed receiving Samatta's decision and will hold talks with him to try to convince him to reconsider. Despite Samatta's retirement, the Taifa Stars have arrived in Ndola ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Chipolopolo, scheduled for Tuesday at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. Samatta's retirement comes as a surprise to many, and his absence will be felt on the team. The TFF will likely try to persuade him to change his mind, but for now, the Taifa Stars will have to prepare for their upcoming match without their captain.
