An instructor from FIFA has commended the Football Association of Zambia's (FAZ) advancements in VAR technology. Two Zambian women referees, Mercy Zulu and Gloria Sambumba, have been certified as Video Assistant Referees (VAR) through COSAFA's training project. This initiative was initiated with FIFA assistant referee Diana Chikotesha, who participated in an all-female VAR training course, paving the way for VAR's introduction at the 2023 COSAFA Women's Championship in South Africa. COSAFA Referees Manager, Felix Tangawarima, expressed his satisfaction with the progress FAZ has made in implementing VAR in Zambia, crediting COSAFA's training efforts. He also stressed the importance of referees embracing this new technology. Tangawarima highlighted that FIFA and CAF are actively promoting VAR usage in all competitions, making it mandatory to have certified VAR referees. He mentioned that VAR will be used in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, emphasizing the need for certified VAR referees. FAZ president, Andrew Kamanga, during the opening of the course, acknowledged the importance of VAR in football and the role played by individuals like retired referee Janny Sikazwe in advancing the VAR project. Finally, FIFA assistant referee Diana Chikotesha expressed gratitude to FAZ for their support and pledged to apply the knowledge gained from the course in their respective districts and work areas.
