Malawi's women's national team recently emerged victorious in this year's 2023 COSAFA Cup Championship after defeating defending champions Zambia in the finals. Despite Malawi's hard-fought win in the finals, COSAFA has issued a disheartening announcement. According to COSAFA, this year's champions, Malawi, will not be receiving any prize money from the tournament organizers. COSAFA faced challenges in attracting commercial funding for the tournament, especially in comparison to the men's tournament. The logistics and financial burden posed by the participants from 11 countries and the host country added to the financial constraints faced by the tournament organizers. However, COSAFA has promised to pay £20,000 for individual awards to Malawi forward Temwa Chawinga, who won both the Player of the Tournament and Golden Boot, as well as Golden Glove winner Cynthia Shongwe from Zimbabwe.
