Temwa Chawinga scored a 90th-minute winner to give Malawi their first-ever COSAFA Women's Championship title in South Africa on Sunday. The Malawian captain had already scored nine goals in the tournament, and she added another crucial one to her tally to help her side overcome Zambia 2-1 in the final. Malawi took the lead in the 34th minute through Asimenyene Simwaka, but Zambia equalised in the 82nd minute through Agnes Phiri from the penalty spot. However, Chawinga had the final say, scoring a brilliant goal in the dying minutes of the match to give Malawi a historic victory. This was Malawi's second final appearance, following their 1-0 defeat against Tanzania in 2021. Chawinga will return home with a golden boot, and possibly for her excellent performances, she might as well take home the player of the tournament award. Malawi's victory is a major boost for women's football in the country, and it will hopefully inspire more girls to take up the sport.
