Margaret Tembo, the 2022 African Champion in the minimum weight (48kg) category, envisions a path beyond her current title, aiming to become the World Champion. Margaret Tembo was born on 21st June 1999 in Lusaka. She grew up as the only girl among seven siblings and attended Nelson Mandela Secondary School in Lusaka. At the age of 12, she embarked on a journey to actualize her passion for sports by joining the Exodus Boxing Academy, established by the late Antony Mumba. This academy provided her with the essential grooming and training, igniting a spark of resistance against gender stereotypes from her family and the local community. "I grew up watching the female boxing champion, Esther Phiri, and was greatly inspired by her tactics and focus in the sport. This pushed me even more to pursue my passion. Boxing is in me." Margaret's unwavering resolve reached a pivotal juncture when she excitedly shared the news of her selection to represent Zambia in Botswana with her mother. This not only transformed her mother's perspective but also turned her into Margaret's most fervent advocate. Her career breakthrough occurred during her inaugural international competition at the Africa Zone 4 Senior Boxing Championships in Botswana, a moment she describes as nerve-wracking. With the unwavering support of her coach and teammates, she displayed exceptional valor, securing the second position and earning a coveted silver medal. Following this triumph, her morale soared, particularly upon her return from the competition, where she was welcomed with cheers, affirming her belief in her chosen path. A few years later, she participated in the African Zone 4 Boxing Championships for the Southern Africa Region in Maputo in April 2022. She achieved the status of Gold Medalist after clinching the top position. Margaret's hard work and dedication were recognized on the global stage when she was awarded the title of the 2020 Best Female Boxer by the International Boxing Association (IBA), a moment she considers one of the highlights of her career. While these achievements are already remarkable, Margaret harbours ambitions of scaling even greater heights. The pinnacle of her remarkable journey arrived in 2022 when she was chosen to compete at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. She not only advanced to the quarterfinals but also proceeded to become Zambia's inaugural female African Champion in Maputo, Mozambique, securing a Gold medal during the African Elite Men's and Women's Boxing Championships. As she now sets her sights on the Paris 2024 Olympics, Margaret has already participated in the Olympic qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal. Despite not securing a spot this time, her determination remains unshaken as she continues to invest the hard work and effort necessary to realise her Olympic aspirations. Like any triumphant journey, Margaret acknowledges that her path hasn't been without challenges and moments of disappointment, such as her inability to make the team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Throughout her career, she has amassed several Gold medals both locally and internationally. Margaret Tembo's story serves as an inspiration not only to aspiring athletes but to anyone with a dream. She has defied gender norms, shattered stereotypes, and conquered prejudices. Furthermore, she expresses hope for the establishment and enhancement of more sporting facilities to provide young athletes with the opportunities to hone their athletic abilities. Margaret recently joined the Green Buffaloes, and she currently competes in the minimum weight category, weighing between 45 and 48 kilograms. She is more than a boxer; she is a role model, and her journey continues to kindle the flames of inspiration among a new generation of athletes in her country.
