Zambia national team coach Avram Grant has defended his decision to snub Young Boys youngster Miguel Chaiwa for the national team call-up, saying that the young Zambian defender has not featured regularly for the Swiss defending champions to warrant a call-up. Grant was responding to a question asked during his media briefing held at Football House on Sunday ahead of the World Cup qualifiers match against Congo Brazzaville set for 17th November in Ndola. "Normally, I don't answer questions about players who don't play," Grant said. "How many saw him play yesterday? He started two games, and I need to select players who play regularly for their clubs." The former Chelsea coach said that Chaiwa has only started two out of 13 games in the Swiss league this season and two UEFA Champions League matches as a substitute. Grant pointed out that the talented youngster has not started any league or Champions League group match this season for his club, Young Boys FC, and has only made substitute appearances. This indicates that there is still room for him to improve and grow. "I need a player who is consistently playing," Grant said. Grant, however, wished Chaiwa well and said that he will continue to monitor the player's progress. Grant's decision to snub Chaiwa has sparked a debate among Zambian football fans, with some criticizing the coach for overlooking the talented youngster, while others have supported Grant's decision, stating that he is right to only select players who are playing regularly for their clubs. It remains to be seen when Chaiwa will finally get his chance to represent Zambia at the senior level. However, with his talent and potential, it is only a matter of time before he wears the national team jersey.
