The Botswana boxing national team is set to embark on a training camp in Lusaka, collaborating with their Zambian counterparts as they gear up for the crucial 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualifiers and various other international competitions. In an interview conducted yesterday, Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) President Danny Chiteule revealed that boxers from both Botswana and Zambia will be participating in joint training sessions during the camp. Chiteule emphasized the significance of this training initiative, highlighting that it would play a pivotal role in preparing the athletes from these two nations for their upcoming international commitments. Chiteule emphasized that this is not the first instance of Botswana's boxers seeking training opportunities in Zambia. In 2021, Botswanan boxers had previously trained in Zambia, and their positive experience prompted them to request a return to the training facilities. "This resurgence of interest is incredibly promising, as it signifies mutual benefits for both our nations' boxers," Chiteule commented. Expanding on the international appeal of Zambia as a training hub, Chiteule revealed that Tanzanian boxing authorities have expressed interest in conducting a training camp in Zambia as well. Conversations and negotiations with the Tanzanian boxing board are currently underway. "Our Tanzanian counterparts have communicated their eagerness to have their boxers train alongside ours here in Zambia. This would further solidify our position as a sought-after training destination, with two neighboring nations joining forces under a unified training program," Chiteule explained. Chiteule attributed the growing interest from neighboring countries to the remarkable achievements of Zambian boxers on the international stage. Notably, in the previous year, Patrick Chinyemba and Stephen Zimba clinched silver and bronze medals, respectively, at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, underscoring the prowess of Zambian boxers in global competitions.
