The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has announced the launch of the Zambian Premier League (ZPL), which will operate independently from FAZ. The announcement was made by FAZ President Andrew Kamanga at a launch event that took place at Lusaka's Peacock Hotel and was attended by SuperSport, one of the longest-serving partners in the history of Zambian football. Kamanga said that the launch of the ZPL is a historic development that will elevate Zambian football to the next level. He pointed out that many developed football nations have embraced this model, and that Zambia has been down this road before, as far back as 1962. "This is not a divorce, but a partnership that promises to take our game to the next level," Kamanga said. "SuperSport has been an all-weather partner and remained with us even after pulling out in other countries. It is a partnership that we value and have no doubt will grow from strength to strength." Under the new structure, FAZ will retain the overall superintendent role over football in the country, while the ZPL will be given appropriate management rights as it operates independently. FAZ will, however, focus on developmental programs through all national teams, women's football, and grassroots. The new structure will allow the ZPL to operate more efficiently and effectively, and it will give the league the freedom to innovate and grow. The league is expected to attract more investment from sponsors and broadcasters, which will help to improve the quality of the game and raise the profile of Zambian football.
