Copper Queens vice-captain Grace Chanda has been ruled out of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup after falling ill, and she has since been replaced by Comfort Selemani. In a heartfelt letter posted on social media, Chanda announced that she had been admitted to the hospital and that her illness would prevent her from participating in the tournament. "It is with great pain and sadness that I must regretfully announce that I will not be able to compete in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup," Chanda wrote. "As a child, I dreamt of playing football at the highest level, and I was fortunate to have a supportive family who provided me with all the necessary encouragement." Chanda further expressed her disappointment at missing out on the World Cup, stating that she had dedicated herself to the national team and strived for consistency. "I play football with immense love and dedication, thanks to my family, fans, the clubs I have played for, and every individual who has been there for me," she said. "When we qualified for the World Cup and finished third at the Africa Cup last year, we carried the hopes of millions of Zambians, and I am confident that we will continue to do so this year, albeit without me." In conclusion, Chanda assured her continued support for the Copper Queens and expressed her belief in their success at the World Cup. "As the Copper Queens, we have made significant progress over the years, and I have no doubt that this is our time to shine on the grand stage of the World Cup," she said. "I am confident that the team will soar high, fight with every ounce of strength to represent Zambia, and secure victories."
