The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is set to officially open David Kaunda Stadium in the Eastern Province on 23rd September 2023. This occasion is the result of extensive rehabilitation efforts supported by FIFA. The grand opening ceremony will be accompanied by a doubleheader match lineup. It will kick off with Chipata Girls Football Club facing off against ZISD FC in the WSL. Following this, history will be made as the Eastern Province hosts its very first National League match. Newly promoted Chipata United will take on Mpulungu Youth FC, with the match scheduled to commence at 3:00 p.m. Brian Mulenga, the Zambia Premier League manager, shared in a memo: "Chipata United will commence their league campaign with their Week 4 match versus Mpulungu Youth. This has been moved forward to be played on Saturday, 23rd September 2023, at David Kaunda Stadium at 3:00 p.m. and will be the main match at the official opening of the facility." Chipata United earned their place in the National League through a second-chance single-match playoff against Livingstone Pirates. This playoff was initiated by the Football Association of Zambia after FIFA deregistered Buildcon Football Club. Chipata United emerged victorious in post-match penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular time. Following their promotion, Chipata United had a brief two-week window to prepare for their new journey in the National League, which is now entering its fourth week this weekend. On 16th March of this year, FAZ President Andrew Kamanga shared his thoughts, describing the newly rehabilitated David Kaunda Stadium in Chipata as "arguably the best-tended to surface in the country." These comments were featured in a FAZ development corner update posted on FAZ's official Facebook page. FIFA allocated USD 300,000 for the rehabilitation of each of the four stadiums, including David Kaunda, Independence, Kaole, and Kasama. Among these, DK Stadium is the first to be officially opened, with the other three far from completion.
