Zambia U-23 captain Yamikani Golden Mashata has said that his debut for the senior national team at the COSAFA tournament was a great experience that has inspired him to work even harder. Mashata, who scored two goals and provided two assists in the tournament, said that the atmosphere at the senior level was different from what he was used to at the U-23 level. In an exclusive interview with Zed Sport, Mashata expressed his elation at the opportunity to represent the senior national team, stating, "It feels great, it's a wonderful feeling because I now know that I am not getting any younger anymore, and it shows that I am improving every day in my career." The emotions were overwhelming for Mashata, knowing how much the games meant to his community and loved ones. "Before each game, I would talk to Mum and my family, and I would know how much the games meant to them. So I just had to work extra hard for the people in my community; people used to go watch each game at my mother's house, and that really showed how much they supported me in my journey." Transitioning from the U-23 level to the senior national team level was a significant step for Mashata. As the U-23 captain, he led his youthful team to achieve results, but at the senior level, he experienced a different atmosphere and pressure. "The atmosphere itself will just push you to do more; you begin to understand how the whole country is looking or wanting the best results," he explained. Mashata attributed the team's success in the COSAFA tournament to collective effort and support. "I can't say one player worked more than the other; everyone who was in the team played a vital role. I believe the main factor was how the technical bench was able to read games, and mostly the LOVE we had in the camp was awesome," he shared. Helping Zambia defend the COSAFA cup and secure a record 7th title, Mashata's achievements have ignited his aspirations and future dreams as a player. "This has really changed my life a lot because it has not just given me courage but also hope that better days are yet to come. The experience was wonderful because I learned a lot, which will help me even in the future," he concluded.
