FAZ president Andrew Kamanga says the association will work on living up to the promise of the fallen heroes by qualifying for the World Cup as the country commemorates 30 years after the Gabon Air Disaster. And veteran coach Fred Mwila said organizing friendly games in honor of the fallen heroes should be an option that FAZ should explore in celebrating the 30th anniversary. Kamanga said in his weekly column 'Presidents Corner' that it remains subsequent to the national team to actualize the hopes and dreams of that golden generation team. Kamanga said the association was in talks with the government to ensure they commemorated the 30 years Zambia lost the fallen heroes in style. "It is a week laden with mixed emotions as it happens to be a build-up to the 30th anniversary of the Gabon disaster which claimed an entire national team off the coast of Gabon. It remains the darkest spot in our game. "As we reflect on the 30th Gabon memorial, we take stock of the promise that the golden generation of Zambian players held for Mother Zambia. It only remains for subsequent generations to actualize the hopes and dreams of that team" Kamanga said. He said with one dream of the generation having been realized, Chipolopolo remained committed to realizing the World Cup dream. On the evening of April 27, 1993, a DHC5 Buffalo transport aircraft of the Zambia Air Force crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Libreville, Gabon. The flight was carrying most of the national football team to a FIFA 1994 World Cup qualifier against Senegal and this year marks 30 years since the players and the entire crew members were killed. "In reflecting on the 30 years of the tragedy, we have been liaising with the government through the Ministry of Youth Sport and Arts to ensure that this event befits the memory of these heroes. We will in due course announce the lined-up activities for the event once our consultations with the government are done," Kamanga said.
