The Zambian National Baseball5 Team will miss the Senior African Championships in Cape Verde scheduled to kickoff on 5th to 8th February 2024.The team will also miss the subsequent World Cup Qualifiers in Hong Kong due to financial constraints. The Zambia Baseball and Softball Association (ZBSA) General Secretary Kenny Matishi confirmed the news saying, "Due to financial challenges, we won't be sending the team to the World Cup Qualifiers." This development comes as a disappointment to the national team's aspirations to capitalize on the recent achievements of the youth squad. The youth team marked their World Cup debut at the Ankara 2023 Youth Baseball5 World Cup in Turkey last year and had aimed to secure qualification for their inaugural Senior World Cup tournament. Despite this setback, Matishi expressed commitment to advancing the sport and preparing for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. He assured that ZBSA will focus on enhancing grassroots development and fielding a competitive team for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar. Matishi expressed optimism about the future of Zambian baseball and emphasized continued investment and development for international prominence.
