Zambia made history yesterday as the third African country to successfully implement Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in domestic matches. The 7,000-seater Woodlands stadium witnessed a full house of excited fans, eagerly anticipating the intense final match competing for the top prize of K700,000. However, due to the limited seating capacity, some spectators with valid tickets were left outside, while others chose to watch the game live on Supersport TV in nearby bars. Before Zambia's achievement, Morocco became the pioneer in 2019 by introducing VAR in domestic matches, followed by Egypt in 2020. Zambia now joins this exclusive group as the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to roll out VAR technology in domestic competitions. The match held at Woodlands Stadium was officiated by non-Zambian referees, with Egypt's Amin Omer as the center referee, and his compatriots Mahamound Abouelregal and Ahmed Hossam Tata as the first and second officials. Meanwhile, Morocco's Samir Guezzaz and Ghana's Daniel Laryea served as the video assistant referees (VAR) in the VAR room, supported by Zambia's own Diana Chikotesha. VAR played a pivotal role in the highly-anticipated final match, which saw Forest Rangers emerge victorious with a 2-0 win over FC Muza. The first half witnessed Chanda Chileshe scoring an own goal, while Quadri Kola scored Ranger's second goal. However, in the 50th minute, VAR technology intervened and disallowed Forest Ranger's second goal due to a foul in the buildup, showcasing the effectiveness and importance of VAR in ensuring fair and accurate decision-making.
