Stoppila Sunzu is a name that brings back memories of heroic triumphs in 2012 when Zambia clinched their first-ever African championship title. As the player entrusted with the crucial penalty kick that would etch his nation's name in history, Sunzu did not disappoint. He scored the goal that secured Zambia's victory in the AFCON tournament held in Gabon. At the age of 33, Sunzu boasts a wealth of experience in the national team setup, having earned his first cap back in 2008. Should he answer the call and join the team's training camp, he stands as an ideal candidate to take on the captain's armband. However, Sunzu's commitment to Chipolopolo has faced scrutiny from some fans over the years. His repeated absence from national team duties has raised questions about his dedication and loyalty. Travel restrictions imposed in China, where Sunzu currently plays for Jinan Xingzhou, could be a contributing factor to his potential absence. Sunzu's last appearance for Zambia was in a 2021 Cameroon Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria in Blida. Since then, he has been unable to honor subsequent national team call-ups, including a friendly match against Israel. On both occasions, Sunzu cited Covid-19 travel restrictions in China as the reason for his absence. Even when he was recalled for a game against the Comoros Islands on June 7, 2022, in which Zambia emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline, Sunzu failed to report to the camp and cited the same travel restrictions as his excuse.
