Minister of Youth, Sport, and Art Elvis Nkandu has expressed his disappointment at the violent scenes that occurred during the recent Kitwe derby football match. The minister, who was present at the match, called for an end to violence in football and urged fans to embrace the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship. In his statement, Nkandu emphasized that football is a unifying force and should not be marred by violent incidents such as the ones witnessed during the derby. He particularly condemned the injury of a police officer and an assistant referee, stating that such incidents have no place in football. Nkandu singled out visiting fans as the culprits behind the throwing of various objects onto the pitch and called on them to desist from such behavior in the future. He appealed to Nkana fans to stop any violent behavior during football matches and to accept defeat with dignity. The minister noted that violence in football discourages fans from attending matches and called for games to be played in a peaceful and enjoyable atmosphere. He emphasized that it is important to accept either a win or a loss and to ensure that games are played without any violence. The Football Association of Zambia is expected to take disciplinary action based on the match commissioners’ report. Meanwhile, Power emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over their rivals, securing their seventh league title in history. Minister Nkandu's statement serves as a reminder of the need for fans to embrace the values of sportsmanship, fair play, and respect for the game. The incident at the Kitwe derby is regrettable and should not be allowed to repeat itself in future football matches. Picture-Minister of sport
