The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) recently released a press statement regarding the upcoming Legends Game between the 2012 Africa Cup squad and Barcelona, which is scheduled to take place on May 25, 2023. According to the statement, the organizers of the match, Kings of Africa, visited the FAZ acting General Secretary Iva Lengwe on May 11, 2023, for a courtesy call. During the meeting, Lengwe discussed some lingering issues with the organizers and provided guidelines to ensure that the match is organized per accepted practices in the game. Lengwe informed the Kings of Africa that they could not legally use the Nike jersey for the game as it would constitute illegality. The FAZ acting General Secretary explained that since the termination of the contract by Nike with Zambia in August 2014, it has been illegal for any Zambian team to don the Nike jersey for any match. He also added that donning the Nike jersey with a FAZ logo would attract sanctions from Nike that would be directed at FAZ. Therefore, it would be illegal for anyone to sell such a jersey to the public as it is a violation of the law. All goods bearing the FAZ logo are a preserve of FAZ as the FAZ logo is registered as a trademark. Lengwe reaffirmed that FAZ was not against the match but only wished that the organization be done per accepted practices in the game. He also stated that it remains the FAZ's responsibility to organize international football matches in Zambia as mandated by FIFA.
