In light of the recent poor performances by the under-20 and under-17 national football teams at their respective African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, football stakeholders are calling for strategies to improve the development of football in the country. Brian Kunsenama, a coach, has suggested that a national football philosophy should be introduced that all players in the different ranks of the national teams can become accustomed to. He believes that with a unified approach, it will be easier for players to transition from junior to national teams, and for coaches to develop players based on a common set of principles. Reuben Kamanga, a football analyst, also stresses the importance of investing in the training of coaches who are in charge of all the junior teams. Kamanga highlights the need for coaches to be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to develop players and instill a strong work ethic in them from a young age. Peter Makembo, the president of the Zambia Sports Fans Association, has called for overall investment in grassroots football. He believes that by investing in grassroots football, more young players will have the opportunity to play the sport and develop their skills. This will not only improve the overall standard of football in the country but also provide a platform for players to progress to higher levels. A coordinated approach is needed to improve the development of football in Zambia. The introduction of a national football philosophy, investment in the training of coaches, and a focus on grassroots football are all key areas that require attention. By taking these steps, Zambia can develop a strong footballing culture and improve its chances of success on the international stage. Picture -FAZ Media
