Zambia Judo Association (ZJA) Secretary General Mabvuto Ng’uni says the organization is working tirelessly with other stakeholders to ensure that members of Judo for Peace in refugee settlements are given an opportunity to take part in international competitions. Speaking in Kalumbila District during a Judo tournament held at Maheba Secondary School, Mr. Ng’uni said Judo is an educational tool that can be used to safeguard the lives of young people. Judokas have gathered in Maheba refugee settlement of Kalumbila District in North Western Province to appreciate each other’s skills. “Today we hosted the national Judo tournament where refugees from Maheba, as well as Mayuka Yuka, participated. We also had the Zambia Police, as well as the Zambia National Service, participating. Judo in Maheba was introduced in 2016 and it has helped children who come from traumatic backgrounds as it allows children from the age of 7 and above to participate. Today, as we speak, we have 385 children participating in Judo,” said Gift Mvula, Maheba Sports Coordinator. The Zambia Judo Association Secretary General Mabvuto Ng’uni said the association always appreciates that sport provides social integration and encourages inclusivity. “There’s no refugee, no man or Muslim, there’s no Catholic in Judo; we are all one,” he said. Meanwhile, North Western Province Sports Advisory Committee Chairperson Adams Ng’ambela has encouraged members of the community to embrace Judo; “People look at certain sports as a threat to society, the essence of that sporting activity is not to terrorize society but to enhance their living and their health among other benefits, so others out there who think these sporting activities are a threat to society need to change their mindset,” Mr. Ng’ambela said.
