The 11th International Athletes' Forum (IAF) recently convened in Lausanne, bringing together over 400 athlete representatives across the Olympic Movement for two days of discussions. The outcomes of these discussions were announced by the IOC Athletes' Commission (AC), with participants including AC members from 181 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), 54 International Federations (IFs), WADA, IPC, Organising Committees for upcoming Olympic Games, and Continental Associations. This diverse assembly also included Athletes' Declaration Steering Committee members and World Olympians Association (WOA) representatives. Representing Zambia was NOCZ Chairperson, Richard Mulenga, who said he would implement the newfound knowledge to grow sports in the country. A notable highlight of the IAF was a comprehensive two-hour Q&A session with IOC President Thomas Bach. President Bach directly engaged with athlete representatives on various topics, including athlete safety, the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, participation of individual neutral athletes with Russian or Belarusian passports, and the Olympic Games' mission to promote peace and understanding through competition. Additional subjects addressed by President Bach encompassed the challenges faced by athletes from conflict-affected regions, the rise of Artificial Intelligence in sports, the growing popularity of esports, the inclusion of AC chairs in NOC delegations at the Olympics, new sports in the Olympic program, cooperation with the Deaflympics, athlete accommodations in the Olympic Village, IOC support for the Olympic Community of Ukraine, the significance of the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 for Africa, and athlete safeguarding. Summarizing the Forum's discussions, IOC AC Chair Emma Terho emphasized the breadth of topics covered, from building an effective AC to the essence of being an Olympian. The forum looked ahead to future Olympic Games in Paris 2024, Milano Cortina 2026, and LA 2028, highlighting numerous programs and initiatives aimed at supporting athletes on their journeys. It also underscored the importance of providing a safe space for athletes and representatives to openly address the issues that matter most to them.
