The 2023 COSAFA Cup, set to be held in Durban, South Africa, from July 5 to July 16, introduces an exciting new format. Twelve teams will be divided into three groups of four, with the top team from each group and the best runner-up advancing to the semifinals. South Africa, Zambia, and Namibia will be the seeded teams in their respective groups. The draw for the group stages will take place after the COSAFA Annual General Meeting on May 26. The tournament offers valuable game-time for players and coaches, particularly for teams still vying for qualification to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The pool stage matches will be held from July 5 to July 12, followed by the semifinals on July 14. The final and third-place play-off will be held on July 16 at the King Zwelithini Stadium. This year's COSAFA Cup differs from previous editions as it eliminates the Plate competition and ensures each country a minimum of three matches. The tournament has a storied history, with only five nations having won the trophy thus far. COSAFA plans to organize a busy calendar of events, including up to nine tournaments, throughout the remainder of 2023. Overall, the 2023 COSAFA Cup brings forth a new and exciting format, providing an opportunity for 12 teams to compete in three groups. The tournament allows players and coaches to gain valuable game-time and international exposure, with a focus on teams still pursuing qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The revised schedule prioritizes player welfare by incorporating an extra day of rest between most matches. With a rich history of memorable performances and legendary matches, the COSAFA Cup has established itself as a prestigious tournament in Southern African football. Furthermore, this year's competition will kick off a busy calendar of events for COSAFA, with numerous regional competitions scheduled throughout the latter half of 2023.
