Power Dynamos have been crowned Super League champions, according to a statement by the managing director of the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC), Owen Silavwe. Speaking at a media briefing in Kitwe, Silavwe congratulated Power Dynamos on their victory, stating that it was not a fluke but a result of years of hard work. This is the first time Power Dynamos have won the Super League since 2011, and their seventh overall. Their previous victories were in 1984, 1991, 1994, 1997, and 2000. Silavwe commended Power Dynamos for their hard work and perseverance, which he said was in line with the values of CEC. He encouraged the team and the executive to maintain their momentum and continue working hard. Silavwe also expressed his hope that CEC staff and management would emulate Power Dynamos' performance by posting good financial results. With three matches remaining before the end of the 2022/2023 season, Power Dynamos have 59 points, 10 more than second-placed Napsa Stars, while Green Buffaloes, who are third, have 48 points. Mathematically, Maestro United Zambia (MUZA) could reach 59 points, assuming Power Dynamos lose their last three games, MUZA wins their last three, and the Football Association of Zambia disciplinary committee rules in their favor over the abandoned Week 30 match against Red Arrows. However, MUZA would have to offset the plus 28 goal difference in favor of Power Dynamos. Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi advised Power Dynamos to reinforce their squad to avoid an early exit from the 2023/2024 CAF Champions League next season. With their victory in the Super League, Power Dynamos are set to represent Zambia in the Champions League, making a comeback to continental football after an eight-year absence. Power Dynamos' last appearance in the Champions League was in 2012 when they suffered a humiliating 7-1 aggregate defeat to TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chambeshi said that African football has advanced, making it difficult for Zambian clubs to compete with the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Simba Sporting Club of South Africa and Tanzania, respectively. He urged Power Dynamos to beef up their team to raise their tempo and go further in the tournament. Zambian teams have not performed well in continental football in recent years, often being eliminated in the early stages. This has led to the country losing two slots. The last time a Zambian club made it to the knockout stage of the Champions League or the second-tier competition was in the 2018/19 season when Nkana reached the Confederation Cup quarter-finals. Zesco United reached the 2016 CAF Champions League semi-finals, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Sundowns. Picture - Power Dynamos
