National junior golf team captain Michael Chuma showcased his prowess over the weekend, cementing his status as one of the country's premier players by securing victory in the 2023 Chick 0 North Championship held at Ndola Golf Club. Chuma, hailing from Nkana, exhibited exceptional form to triumph in Zambia's flagship junior golf tournament with a considerable lead. He outperformed his clubmate and fellow national junior team player, Leonard Chibwe, by a substantial six-stroke margin. Throughout the 72-hole competition marked by windy conditions, Chuma demonstrated his skill by achieving a one-over-par 147, an impressive six shots ahead of Chibwe, whose score stood at seven-over-par 153. Notably, Chuma, boasting a two-handicap, also clinched the A Division Net title in the age group of 13 to 18. His score of 145 points edged out Ndola junior golfer Roshan Patel by a single point. Sam Kalenga, the captain of Ndola Golf Club, expressed his excitement over the event's large and diverse field, with over 100 juniors from various parts of the country participating. "We had a field of 102 juniors from all the clubs on the Copperbelt and as far as from Kasama. It was a very good field and we at Ndola Golf Club are proud to host this Zambia Golf Union junior tournament, which is undoubtedly the biggest junior tournament in Zambia," he remarked. Kalenga lauded the collaboration between various sponsors and the Zambia Golf Union, particularly recognizing the title sponsor Polytra Zambia Limited for their contribution to the sport's growth within the nation. He further emphasized the promising potential of Zambia's golf scene, as even juniors as young as six years old displayed impressive swings, hinting at a bright future for the sport in the country. Within the B Division, Ndola junior golfers Emmanuel Mangwengele and G. Phíri shared the honors of gross winner and runner-up with scores of 161 and 170 points respectively.
