The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) convened on Thursday, under the leadership of President Dr Patrice Motsepe, in Algiers. During the meeting, the committee approved the format and dates for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers. Under FIFA's expanded World Cup format, the new qualification structure will involve all 54 Member Associations of CAF, which will be divided into nine groups. This inclusive approach ensures that every member has the opportunity to compete for a spot in the prestigious tournament. Under the new format, the winners of each group will secure automatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Additionally, the four best runners-up from the groups will participate in a CAF Play-Off tournament. The victorious team from the CAF Play-Off tournament will then proceed to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament, enhancing their chances of securing a place in the World Cup. To mark this significant milestone, the Executive Committee also announced that the Official Draw for the FIFA World Cup 2026 African Qualifiers will take place on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, in Cotonou, Benin. This momentous event will occur on the eve of the 45th CAF Ordinary General Assembly, creating an exciting atmosphere for the football community.
