The Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) executive has redirected its attention towards the women's sevens national team as they aim to secure their first appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This strategic shift comes into action after the men's team failed to qualify. Cecilia Tresha, the General Secretary of ZRU, emphasised in a recent interview that the focus has now moved to the women's team. This decision is based on their promising pre-qualifying performance, which suggests a better chance of securing a spot in the Paris tournament. Tresha further said that they need to take valuable lessons learned from the men's team's unsuccessful attempt to qualify. The men's team finished fifth out of 12 teams at the final qualifying tournament held in Harare, Zimbabwe, last weekend. "With the men's campaign concluded, as you may be aware, there was an Olympic qualifier in Zimbabwe over the weekend... With the men's qualification out of reach, we are now gearing up for the women, who will be participating in a similar tournament in Tunisia next month," Tresha explained. She also disclosed that the women's team is scheduled to enter a training camp in Lusaka next week, where they will intensify their preparations for the upcoming tournament. The focus is firmly set on securing a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, and the women's team is determined to make Zambia proud on the international stage.
