Diggers Rugby Club extends a call to sports administrators, urging them to recognize and honour their legends while they are still alive and well. Brian Musonda, Chairperson of Diggers, emphasises the importance of celebrating those who played a pivotal role in shaping the club into Zambia's most accomplished rugby establishment. The club has chosen to manifest this recognition by hosting tournaments in honour of these outstanding individuals. In a recent interview, Musonda elaborated on the initiative, stating that Diggers aims to create a lasting impact by bestowing these accolades upon individuals during their lifetime. The club's approach reflects a sincere appreciation for their contributions. To kick off this endeavor, Diggers Rugby Club is set to organise a Sevens tournament in the coming weekend. This event is dedicated to the memory of Francis Mwila, an individual who has left an indelible mark on the club's history. The upcoming tournament will be christened "The Francis Mwila Mopani Sevens Tournament" and will be hosted at the Nkana West Lair in Kitwe. Musonda shared his sentiment, stating, "While memorial tournaments and posthumous events hold significance, at Diggers, we believe that honouring someone means much more when they can personally witness the recognition." Francis Mwila's contributions to Diggers are notable, having clinched league titles as a player, captain, coach, and chairperson. Notably, he was the first indigenous Zambian to captain the side in 1984, assuming the chairmanship the following year. Reflecting on his journey, Musonda highlighted unity and dedication within the rugby community as instrumental to the club's success. He expressed his desire to see Diggers regain its former glory and expressed the club's commitment to acknowledging a range of individuals whose names have emerged for honouring. Diggers Rugby Club's proactive approach to recognition stands as a testament to their genuine appreciation for their legends' contributions. The decision to honour these individuals while they are still alive showcases the club's heartfelt dedication to preserving their legacy.
