In preparation for next month's Olympic Games qualifying tournament in Zambia, the national sevens rugby team coach, Andrew Kaminsa, has unveiled a provisional squad of 40 players, including Lawrence Kaushiku. Kaushiku, who etched his name in history during the 2022 Commonwealth Games by scoring a try against Wales, has been chosen to join the team's endeavor for Olympic qualification. The accomplished Red Arrows fly-half, renowned for his performances at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, is among the notable players who have made the cut for this significant opportunity. The Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) released a list yesterday, featuring Kaushiku and 12 other athletes who represented the nation in last year's Commonwealth Games. The squad has been divided into two groups, namely the Midlands and Copperbelt select teams. Kaminsa, sharing his insights, mentioned that despite Kaushiku's name not appearing on the ZRU's list, he is indeed available for selection and was an active participant in the team's recent training sessions. After the Mopani Copper Mines Sevens Championship in Kitwe, scheduled for the upcoming weekend, the team will transition into a residential camp. Kaminsa's task will then involve reducing the squad to 14 players before the team embarks on a journey to Zimbabwe. The tournament in Zimbabwe, set to take place from September 15th to 16th, is set to host 12 countries vying for Olympic qualification. Zambia has been placed in Pool B, alongside Kenya, Namibia, and Nigeria. Among the Midlands select team members are key players such as Mwamba Chilufya, Andrew Kapapa, Elisha Bwalya, and skipper Israel Kalumba, among others. The Copperbelt select team, on the other hand, features talents like Martin Chisanga, Perry Mwape, and David Kaloko, representing various clubs in the region. The announcement of this provisional squad marks a significant step in Zambia's pursuit of Olympic qualification, as these dedicated athletes strive to bring their best performances to the international stage.
