The ZRU, facing significant financial challenges, has received a lifeline from Rugby Africa. The national sevens team has been granted the opportunity to participate in this weekend's Olympic Games qualifiers without the burden of paying the participation fee. Zambia's involvement in the qualifiers had been hanging in the balance due to the ZRU's inability to meet the €3,000 fee by the Monday deadline. ZRU's financial woes prompted a plea for an extension from ZRU president Chileshe Bweupe. He reached out to the continental rugby body, requesting more time to organize the necessary funds while still being able to travel to Zimbabwe. In his email to the chairman of the finance committee, Bweupe emphasized the importance of support for the new executive team. He expressed hope that Rugby Africa would view their request favorably. Chileshe Bweupe commended Rugby Africa for their understanding and assistance during this challenging period. He acknowledged the gesture of temporary relief provided by the finance committee and pledged to relay this goodwill to Zambia's Ministry of Sports. Beyond the men's sevens team, the financial hurdle extends to the women's sevens team as well. They will also be required to pay a €3,000 participation fee ahead of the final Olympic Games qualifiers scheduled to take place in Tunisia next month.
